Source checked September 13, 2026: Shopify product media types and uploading and managing files. The checker compares a decoded image with the listed resolution, aspect-ratio and file guidance. It is not an upload acceptance test and cannot inspect your store's theme or connected sales channels.

Square is a choice, not an upload requirement

A portrait or landscape product image does not fail simply because it is not square. Use a consistent ratio for featured collection images, and preview whether your theme crops or contains the photo. The Shopify product image size guide explains the export and storefront review.

Read megapixels and file weight separately

Width multiplied by height gives the pixel count. For example, 1500 x 2000 is 3 megapixels, while 5000 x 5000 is 25 megapixels. File weight is a separate property. This checker uses a decimal 20 MB threshold of 20,000,000 bytes and asks you to confirm the upload in Shopify.

Browser support is not Shopify format support

Some formats listed for product media cannot be decoded by this browser. Export a PNG or JPEG copy to use the checker if needed. The general Files page lists a narrower format set than the product-media page, so check the upload context and any plan restrictions. The checker does not inspect all encoding or animation details.

Inspect the garment after export

Check colour, fabric detail and the full outline of the garment. Keep a high-quality master before resizing. There is no universal file weight or compression percentage that makes every clothing image look good. Review the real product page and collection grid on mobile and desktop.

What size should Shopify product images be?

Shopify lists product and collection images up to 5000 x 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, with a file size smaller than 20 MB. For square product images, 2048 x 2048 is recommended, not a minimum. Choose a consistent ratio that suits your theme.

Must Shopify product images be square?

No. Consistent framing helps a collection grid, but the ratio can be portrait, landscape or square. The general image-file guidance lists a range from 100:1 to 1:100. Preview the actual theme to check crops and spacing.

Which product-image formats does Shopify list?

The product-media page lists PNG, JPEG, PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP. The general Files page lists a narrower set, and upload context or plan restrictions can apply. The checker does not decode every format that Shopify supports.

Does Shopify optimise images automatically?

Shopify creates image sizes and selects a delivery format for the customer's browser. Your theme determines how the image is displayed. Check the actual storefront instead of assuming a specific crop, format or zoom behaviour.

Does this checker upload my images?

No image file is uploaded by the checker. It reads the file in your browser. Site analytics can record file properties and checker results. It is not an upload acceptance test and does not check the final Shopify storefront.
