Etsy Listing Photo Size: Dimensions & Thumbnail Guide
For Etsy listing photos, aim for at least 2000 pixels on each side. The image does not have to be square. For clothing, the more useful question is whether the whole garment stays visible when a thumbnail crops the photo.

Choose Dimensions Without Stretching the Garment
A 3000 by 2000 image gives you a landscape starting point; 2000 by 2000 is square. These are examples, not mandatory templates. Resizing a tiny original to those dimensions does not restore fabric texture or make an out-of-focus seam sharp.
Keep an untouched original. Export a separate listing copy so you can return to the full frame if a thumbnail cuts off a sleeve. Check the export at full size for missing texture, colour shifts and compression blocks around buttons.
Test the Thumbnail Before Publishing
Etsy uses square, portrait and landscape thumbnail views. Leave room around the item and use Etsy's thumbnail adjustment tool. Our free Etsy photo checker and crop preview lets you explore example frames first. It reads the photo locally; the previews are not exact Etsy templates.
- Check the silhouette. Look for the full neckline, sleeves and hem. On trousers, keep both cuffs visible. On a dress, check that a shorter crop does not suggest a different length.
- Compare the empty space. If one crop removes the garment edge, take a wider photo or use an uncropped original. Do not squash or stretch the clothing to make it fit.
- Separate overview and detail. Use an overview to show shape, then a close-up to show a zip, knit or seam. A close-up alone cannot communicate the whole garment.
- Review in Etsy. Save the listing draft and inspect its thumbnail and full image on your phone. Adjust the framing there before publishing.
If a Photo Will Not Upload
Try a JPG copy with a smaller file size before reducing dimensions. Compare it with your original: does the weave still look like the same fabric? Compression settings vary by editor, so there is no universal quality percentage that keeps every garment photo intact.
The checker cannot decode every format on every browser. A HEIC decoding error here does not mean Etsy rejects HEIC. Convert a copy locally and retry. Flatten transparent backgrounds onto a colour you chose instead of relying on the marketplace to fill them.
Prepare a Clothing Photo Set
Start with the front and back, then add details that answer a buyer's questions: closure, lining, label and any visible wear. Use consistent lighting. Compare the colour against the physical garment before exporting; a technically large file can still misrepresent what you sell.
Shop icons and banners have different specifications from listings. Use the linked Etsy reference for those formats rather than reusing a listing crop.

What is the best photo size for Etsy listings?
Aim for at least 2000 pixels on each side. A 3000 by 2000 landscape image is one practical example, not a required ratio. Start with a sharp original and leave space around the garment.
Is 1MB a hard Etsy photo limit?
Etsy warns that files above 1MB may have upload problems, especially on slow connections. Treat this as troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed rejection or a hard cap.
Should clothing photos be square or landscape?
Etsy recommends a landscape or square first photo. Check the garment in different thumbnail shapes before publishing. A crop that fits a jacket may cut off the hem of a long dress.
What file format should I use?
JPG is a practical starting point for clothing photos. Etsy also lists PNG, GIF, SVG and HEIC. Avoid animation and transparency; transparent areas can appear black. Review the export before publishing.
